A new parking lot has been installed at the intersection of Šilutės Road and Jūrininkų Avenue.
“A strange parking lot. If it is meant for cars, there are no apartment buildings nearby. Maybe for trucks, or perhaps a rear bus stop parking lot?” – pondered Evaldas from Klaipėda.
Klaipėda’s deputy mayor Algirdas Kamarauskas explained that this parking lot is part of the Šilutės Road reconstruction project, which specifically included creating an additional space here so that oversized cargo transported from the port could more easily turn towards the Rimkai railway crossing.
“We planned several locations, but ultimately it was decided to build the parking lot right here. It is needed for the frequently transported wind turbine structures along this route,” said A. Kamarauskas.
According to him, the parking lot is currently being finished with asphalt. Soon, parts of wind turbines, the so-called “blades,” which can be up to 75 meters long, are planned to be transported along this route. Together with the truck, such a transport combination is even larger in size.
Therefore, it is expected that the new parking lot will greatly simplify the transportation of oversized cargo from the southern part of Klaipėda port. Such transport combinations require more space to maneuver, especially when making turns.

The parking lot is not intended for car parking or other purposes, so it should normally remain empty.
We remind that Klaipėda has approved regulations for the use of city streets for transporting oversized cargo. It sets appropriate tariffs for transporting such cargo on city streets.
Until now, such parking lots, additional road sections, or even temporary bridges for oversized cargo transport were usually installed by the cargo carriers themselves. For the first time, such a parking lot was specially installed by the Klaipėda municipality itself.
