„The idea to decorate the building’s annex did not come by chance. The house community has already invested in landscaping – maintained greenery, bushes, decorative lawns, forest paths, and forest edge zones. However, one element of the building still stood out from the maintained environment – its roof, which the community calls the “house hat.” It was this space that I decided to turn into a work of art,“ says the artist who added an unusual accent to the silhouette of the apartment building’s roof.
Not just a bird, but also part of the district’s history
The composition made up of the building’s four walls depicts an owl looking northeast and southwest. The chosen motif is not accidental – it was born from the wordplay “owl in Lazdynai” and “Lazdynai owl.”
The latter name is well known in Lithuanian literary history. “Lazdynai owl” was the joint pseudonym of sisters Sofija Ivanauskaitė-Pšibiliauskienė and Marija Ivanauskaitė-Lastauskienė. It is precisely their work and history that the piece will become a kind of visual tribute to.
The image of the owl in Lazdynai merges with several different stories – local architecture, natural environment, literature, and the district’s very name. The work allows the familiar space of the apartment building to be seen differently, and for people passing by daily, it will provide an opportunity to pause and pay attention to what usually remains in the background of the city.

The annex is well visible not only in the Lazdynai microdistrict but also from farther points in the city. Therefore, the “Lazdynai owl” has become not only a visual sign of a specific house but also of the entire district.
In Vilnius, art is not only in galleries
The art support program “Creating Vilnius” has been bringing contemporary art into everyday city spaces, alongside Vilnius residents, for seven years. Art projects appear where people live, walk, go to work, or simply pass by.
This is one of the projects that won the 2024 program. Over seven years, this program has already presented 47 contemporary art projects in Vilnius. All of them can be found on the Vilnius DNA platform.
