“Today, out of the blue, news spread – project proposals for a private plot are being publicized, which are intended to be implemented in one of the most beautiful places in Palanga.

According to the published project, it is planned to demolish the legendary “Jūratė” canteen and build guest houses in its place. All this is planned in a historic place in Palanga, next to the villa “Komoda” built by the Tiškevičiai family,” the mayor wrote on his Facebook page.
According to Š. Vaitkus, looking at the proposed architectural vision, a very simple question arises: do we really want such architectural buildings in one of the most sensitive places in Palanga?
“And it is clear to the naked eye that several apartment buildings are possibly planned here. According to the detailed plot plan, a hotel can be built in this place, but not buildings that clearly resemble apartment houses. However, even in press releases today, it is emphasized that a complex with 60 apartments is planned to be built here,” he wrote.
According to the mayor, it is indicated that two four-story buildings will be designed, each with 28 apartments, and four one-story buildings ranging from 110 to 130 square meters, which will have individual apartments.
“After seeing the press release, I asked the city’s chief architect what he thought about the published solution. His reaction was very clear: ‘I would rather quit my job than approve such architecture and coordinate such solutions.’
I completely agree with him. Palanga cannot be built up with just anything. Especially in places that shape the face of our resort, the landscape, and people’s memories,” the mayor insisted.
According to him, the former “Jūratė” canteen, which he personally knew, is ten times more beautiful than what is currently proposed in its place.
“And it is very important to explain: the fact that private plot owners publicize project proposals does not mean that such solutions will be approved. Publicizing project proposals is mandatory. The project will be evaluated by specialists, architects, the municipality, responsible institutions, the Department of Cultural Heritage, and the Regional Architects’ Council.

Therefore, today nothing has been and can be decided yet. But I urge the people of Palanga and those who love Palanga – express your opinion,” Š. Vaitkus wrote.
In his opinion, possibilities could be sought not to demolish the former “Jūratė” sanatorium canteen, but to preserve it and incorporate it into the architectural vision of this area.
“Palanga must grow, but not at any cost. We must be especially responsible and sensitive to those places that create Palanga’s uniqueness. Would such architecture, focused on many expensive square meters of real estate, suit one of the most beautiful places in Palanga?
WHAT DO YOU THINK? For me, as the city leader and a resident of Palanga, your opinion and support are very important,” the mayor added.
As announced, the complex is planned on a plot located about 200 meters east of J. Basanavičius Street, next to the villa “Komoda.” Measuring in a straight line, the distance from the future buildings to the sea is about 250 meters.
Currently, on this plot near Meilės Alley, there is a former canteen, garages, and storage rooms, which are planned to be demolished.
The project proposals submitted for public discussion indicate that the apartment construction is planned by the Kaunas real estate operations company “Sitkuva,” which is indirectly controlled by a resident of Jonava.
