Dr. Robert Mordkin, head of urology at the Virginia Hospital Center, emphasized that smoking is also one of the most important risk factors for bladder cancer.
According to him, smoking is the lifestyle habit that causes the greatest harm to bladder health. According to the American Cancer Society, smokers are at least three times more likely to develop bladder cancer than non-smokers.
Food can also irritate the bladder
One common problem is an overactive bladder. It can manifest as a frequent and sudden urge to urinate, and sometimes a person does not make it to the toilet in time.
Urogynecologist Dr. R. Mark Ellerkmann explained that such symptoms can be worsened by foods and drinks that irritate the bladder. Among the most commonly mentioned are caffeine, carbonated drinks, citrus fruit juices, chocolate, and artificial sweeteners.
According to the doctor, with age the bladder can become more sensitive to certain irritants. If it is noticed that a particular product worsens symptoms, avoiding it or reducing its amount may help.
The urge to urinate should not be ignored
Enduring for a long time and postponing a visit to the toilet is also not a good way to “train” the bladder.
According to Dr. R. M. Ellerkmann, holding urine for too long overstretches the bladder. Although there is no need to live by a strict toilet visit schedule, when feeling a clear need, it should not be constantly ignored.
Dr. R. Mordkin added that trying to train the bladder to hold increasingly larger amounts of urine can harm it.

An important rule after sexual intercourse
Some women experience recurrent urinary tract infections after sexual intercourse. To reduce their risk, the doctor advises urinating soon after sexual intercourse.
Emptying the bladder can help remove bacteria that have entered the urethra and reduce the likelihood of infection.
Too much water can also be dangerous
Many take the advice to drink as much water as possible as undoubtedly healthy advice. However, doctors warn that it is possible to overdo it in this case as well.
Drinking a very large amount of water in a short time can dangerously lower the sodium concentration in the blood. This condition is called water intoxication.
The doctor advises drinking enough but not trying to forcefully consume the largest amount of fluids daily. In most cases, thirst can be a guide, unless a doctor has indicated otherwise due to health conditions.
What signs should draw attention?
Bladder disorders can manifest in different ways. Among the most common signs mentioned are:
- frequent or sudden urge to urinate;
- urinary incontinence;
- painful urination;
- difficulty completely emptying the bladder;
- weak urine stream;
- blood in the urine;
- frequent nighttime urination.
These symptoms do not necessarily indicate a serious disease, but if they recur, worsen, or blood is noticed in the urine, one should consult a doctor.
