“The beginning of the southern port area development is already within reach. A long preparation path has been completed, and today we are stepping onto the construction site. After the preparatory works, the construction of the southern breakwaters, which will start in autumn, is the first stage in implementing the largest development project in the history of Klaipėda port,” says Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

The preparatory works for the breakwater construction starting on Kairių Street will last more than a month. Contractors will work in the zones of future temporary roads, which will be needed to implement the project, and other project implementation stages – the construction site will be prepared, the area will be arranged, and planned greenery removal works, which have been coordinated with Klaipėda city municipality, will be carried out. The preparatory construction site works are performed by the company “Raguvilė”.
The southern port gates will be built by the company “Tilsta”, which won the competition announced this year. The contract value concluded with this company by the Port Authority is 24.5 million euros excluding VAT. The contractor plans to start the works in autumn.

Breakwaters or dams are important from an environmental perspective – they are needed to stop the inflow of salty water into the Curonian Lagoon. In the future, the southern gates complex will also include a marina and a quay.
The southern port area development project, which creates new port operation and cargo handling potential, is allocated the largest part of the 2026–2029 Klaipėda port strategic activity plan investment program funds – almost 600 million euros. Considering the share of future investors, the total amount of the entire developed project will exceed 1 billion euros. This will be one of the largest investment projects currently being implemented in Lithuania.
