On Sunday evening, after receiving information from the Criminal Intelligence Division of the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District, police officers in Utena stopped a “Toyota Yaris Cross” car. The crossover with Polish license plates was driven by a 19-year-old man. The car was packed – six young foreigners were traveling in it.
To the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District’s Puškos Border Post officers who arrived at the scene, five of them introduced themselves as citizens of Afghanistan, and the sixth as a citizen of Pakistan. All of them arrived in Lithuania from Latvia and did not request asylum in our country.
The foreigner who transported them was detained and placed in the temporary detention facilities of the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District.
A pre-trial investigation into the illegal transportation of people across the state border for selfish purposes has been initiated at the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District, led by the prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Panevėžys Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
For such a criminal act, the law provides for a fine or imprisonment for up to eight years.
Illegal migrants who traveled via the so-called Latvian route and were detained, after completing the necessary procedures, are usually returned by Lithuanian border guards to their Latvian colleagues.
On Tuesday, the court imposed a preventive measure on the Toyota driver – arrest for three months.
The “Toyota Yaris Cross” car is temporarily stored at the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District.
