The New York Times, citing people familiar with the investigation, reported on Wednesday that D. Rush is a former high-ranking CIA official.
The FBI investigation revealed that D. Rush provided false information about his education and military experience in his job application, including lies about earned university degrees and service as a Navy pilot.
According to written testimony, he also submitted falsified timesheets and received $77,000 for military leave, falsely claiming to be a member of the Navy Reserve.
The document describes D. Rush as a former senior U.S. government agency employee with clearance to work with top-secret information and access to classified information.
He was arrested on May 19 and charged with theft of government funds.
D. Rush’s lawyer declined to comment to The New York Times.
From last November to this March, D. Rush repeatedly requested from his employer “large amounts of foreign currency and gold bars worth tens of millions of dollars for work-related expenses.”
Written testimony states that D. Rush received cash and gold. No further information is provided about what he needed them for.
It later emerged that the gold and most of the cash disappeared from a safe at the officer’s workplace, prompting a search of his home. About 303 gold bars were found during the search, valued at over $40 million.
