Even before the match, G. Neville, who played 85 times for the England national team and as many as 400 matches for Manchester United, criticized the Argentine central defender pair C. Romero and Lisandro Martinez.
“It seems like they concede at least one goal in every match. When you watch them, you see that they can score goals themselves, play excellently with their head, be everywhere – it’s incredible. Because of that, I call them the worst best central defender pair in the world. Sometimes they can be simply incredible, but sometimes – just absurd,” said the Englishman on the Overlap Podcast.
Interestingly, both mentioned Argentine defenders play precisely in England – C. Romero represents London’s Tottenham Hotspur, and L. Martinez plays for Manchester United.
After the match, in which they each received a yellow card but allowed England only two shots on target throughout the game, the Argentine defenders were asked about G. Neville’s comments.

And while L. Martinez remained more diplomatic and said that Argentinians are used to “people talking about them, and they respond with their performances on the pitch,” C. Romero did not mince words.
“The only thing I hope is that when I finish my career, I won’t be such a fool. I hope I won’t criticize any player or other people,” said the Argentine central defender speaking with DSports. “We do what we can for our national team. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but we are happy to be in the World Cup final again.
We are making history, it is very important to us because we understand the importance of these shirts better than anyone else.”
I hope that when I finish my career, I won’t be such a fool.
The Argentine national team has only one barrier left before their second consecutive world champion title. On Sunday at 10 PM in the final, the Argentinians will face the Spaniards.
